Meeting the environmental goals set by SFK and the city of Kiel

After delivering our Energy Storage Solutions to hybrid ferry Gaarden in July 2020, EST-Floattech was requested by Holland Ship Electric to deliver the Energy Storage Systems for Düsternbrook too, owned by Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel (SFK).

In May 2019, Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel (SFK) contracted Holland Shipyards Group for the design and delivery of a new ferry, named Gaarden. During the construction of this first ferry, SFK opted for the design and delivery of a second ferry, named Düsternbrook. Both vessels are part of the re-generation of the city’s passenger fleet.

The “Düsternbrook” is a fully electric ferry with 24.7 metres, a beam of 6.5 metres, capacity for 140 passengers, 60 bicycles and an automated mooring system. The vessel will operate within the area of Kiel, between Reventlou and Wellingdorf. The design of the three additional vessels will follow that of the Gaarden and will be equipped with a hybrid drivetrain that can be powered by either generators or EST-Floattech’s battery-based energy storage system (ESS).

Strong Partnership with System Integrator HSE

Over the years EST-Floattech has executed many projects with Holland Shipyard . This way we ensure that our battery solutions are well integrated with the entire electrical system.

Meeting environmental goals of Kiel

With the new vessels, SFK is renewing its current fleet. The replacement of the fleet is in line with the environmental goals set by SFK and the city of Kiel. The city of Kiel aims to be CO2 neutral by 2050 and expects shipping to play a major part in this shift. Replacing the fleet adds great value to this.

Optimal safety

The energy storage system (ESS) delivered by EST-Floattech has a raft of integrated safety features. Its unique active balancingand passive safety system is applied at the module and string level. Heat is dissipated by a simple off-the-shelf aircon unit. The battery racks are a favorable option as they can easily be installed in a modular fashion.
