EST-Floattech delivers the complete ESS package to Hagland “Pioneer”

System integrator Hoogendijk Electric has contracted EST-Floattech to support them with the design for the complete Battery System for a Norwegian newbuild: the third Hybrid Coaster for Hagland’s “Pioneer”. Currently being built at the Royal Bodewes shipyard, it is due for delivery halfway through 2023.

EST-Floattech’s Green Orca battery system enables the 5,000-DWT self-discharging bulk carrier to make zero-emission port calls. The vessel, one of a series of three, will also sail in full-electric mode, for example, in environmentally sensitive environments such as fjords or near-coastal communities. When there is no shore connection available, the battery system also allows for zero-emission discharging of the transported bulk cargo.

During long-distance transits, the system can be used for peak shaving via the electric motor and generator (otherwise called the PTI or PTO). The batteries can be charged during transit or when the vessel is in the harbour via the shore connection.

For this project, EST-Floattech deployed its proven and DNV-certified Green Orca battery system. The system, including battery management software and control units for enhanced safety, was optimised for the ship’s operational profile in close cooperation with system integrator Hoogendijk Electric, responsible for the complete onboard electrical installation. For this project, fast delivery was essential. At this time, there were problems in the supply chain caused by COVID restrictions, among others. EST-Floattech ensured that they had all supply-critical elements in stock, which allowed for quick assembly and production of the system and thus allowed them to deliver on time.

The battery system

The proven and DNV-certified Green Orca battery system was the battery system for this vessel. The system, including battery management software and control units for enhanced safety, was optimised for the ship’s operational profile in close cooperation with system integrator Hoogendijk Electric, responsible for the complete onboard electrical installation. Note that to prevent any delivery hick-ups, EST-Floattech has all delivery-sensitive components in stock, enabling fast assembly and production for on-time delivery.

Walter van der Pennen, Commercial Director at EST-Floattech, states: “It is interesting to see changing market demand as part of the energy transition. It is clear that our industry is evolving towards a more environmentally friendly mindset, partly driven by external regulations but also by developing insights within maritime companies themselves. This will lead to more and more hybrid and even electrical coasters in the coming months and years. We are grateful for the trust that Hoogendijk and our end-clients have put in us to arrange for a safe, long-term power solution for this vessel. With this hybrid coaster, Hagland is clearly a forerunner in the market, and we are proud to be part of that process.”

IMO TIER III

The newbuild, the third in a row, will not only sail in zero-emission mode in port, but it will also reduce noise and emissions during sailing. According to Hagland, their new coasters will reduce CO2 emissions by 40% and NOx emissions by about 90% compared to older vessels in their fleet, which will be replaced. With EST-Floattech’s battery-hybrid system, the ship complies with IMO TIER III requirements.

Hagland’s new vessel program is supported by ENOVA SF (the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment’s organisation aiming to reduce emissions and develop energy and climate technology) and the Green Shipping Program for fleet renewal. According to Hagland, the new vessels will make their fleet the most environmentally friendly in this segment.

Launching of the Hagland “Pioneer”
